Newell Housing Association was established as a Management Body by Ministerial Order under the Alberta Housing Act effective January 1, 1995. Newell Housing is overseen by a Board of Directors consisting of 2 representatives from the City of Brooks, and one from Tilley, one from Duchess, and one from Rosemary.
Newell Housing Association has 109 seniors' apartments in Brooks. The apartments are located in the Pioneer Villas 1-4. Of these 109 apartments there are 6 bachelor suites, 102 one bedroom apartments, and 1 two bedroom apartment. Newell Housing Association is also responsible for a 6 unit villa in Rosemary, a 4 unit villa in Duchess, and a 6 unit villa in Tilley. All of these units are subsidized seniors housing with the rent being geared to income.
Community Housing/ Rental Subsidy Programs
The Community Housing Program provides subsidized rental housing to low-income families, who cannot afford private sector accommodation. Applicants whose income falls below local income limits are eligible to apply; Management and tenant selection is delegated to the local housing operators. Applicants are given priority based on need, as determined by income, assets, and current housing condition. A tenant's rent, which includes heat, water and sewer expenses, is based on 30 percent of a household's adjusted income. The tenant is responsible for electricity, telephone and cable television, as well as any additional services they may request (i.e. parking). We have 41 community houses in the City of Brooks.
Newell Housing Association also provides a subsidy program to assist people in need with their rental costs. This is a program for persons or families who are renting through private landlords and require assistance in paying their rent. There are two different programs, one being the direct to tenant and the other the direct to landlord.
All of Newell Housing Associations programs can be applied for in person at; 426 3rd Ave W in Brooks, AB (directly behind the RCMP station)
